Fresh water is a limited resource and protecting it is vital. We borrow water from nature, use it, clean it and return it. And we monitor the marine ecosystems carefully.
Wir müssen zusammenarbeiten, um eine nachhaltigere Zukunft zu unterstützen. Durch intelligente Kartonlösungen und zielgerichtete Kooperationen können wir einen echten Unterschied machen.
Climate change is the biggest challenge of our time. How we tackle this crisis will determine the future of our planet. Climate change requires real change. Companies and brands across industries have committed to ambitious targets that challenge business models and require a shift to sustainable solutions. Packaging solutions and materials play an important role.
We are a sustainable business partner
Our business has deep roots in both history and the forest. In 1685 the Queen of Sweden entrusted the Iggesund mill to use local waters and forests. Even if our business has changed with time, we still base it on the same two main pillars – wood and water. Wood coming from nearby forests, providing raw material for our paperboard and energy to power our production. And water from nearby lakes and rivers, giving us freshwater to use and renewable energy from hydroelectric power plants.
Today and as part of the Holmen Group, our business model is circular. The forest ecocycle gives us our wood, which is refined and made into products, products our customers can then refine in their turn. As the lifecycle draws to a close, the products can be recycled and come back to life in a new form or be useful as biofuel.
Together we can make a difference
But sustainability is not only about our business, our mills and our paperboard products. We want to be part of the bigger picture by offering purposeful solutions that have a positive impact — for the end consumer, the business and for the planet. By working together, we can use the power of our collective knowledge and create purposeful solutions that are truly sustainable.

More than 70 percent of greenhouse gas emissions produced by human activities come from energy consumption. Bioenergy powers our paperboard production. We also generate electricity from both water and wind.

Switching from fossil-based to renewable materials is essential. For our paperboards we use the leftover wood parts – from the sawmills or from forest management – to make climate smart, renewable packaging material.

Choosing the right materials for packaging is an effective way to reduce climate impact. Our paperboards are based on a renewable raw material, wood, completely unlike most plastics that are made of fossil oil.

Sustainable use of our resources requires a shift to circularity. Using and re-using fibre-based materials is part of the solution. After use, all our boards are very well suited for recycling.

We operate according to globally recognised standards for forest stewardship and management of environmental, energy and quality aspects.
The environmental performance of our paperboard is the result of efficient industrial facilities with low environmental impact and almost exclusive use of clean bioenergy.
To protect biodiversity is an integrated part of our production and our sustainability work. At our biodiversity site you can learn more about how we protect the ecosystems around us and how our products can contribute to more sustainable solutions.
Since investing in a biomass-fuelled CHP plant our mill in Workington, England, is powered almost entirely on bioenergy. Learn more about the Grow Your Income project and how the switch to renewable energy also can have a positive effect on the local community.
Within Holmen Iggesund we produce two types of paperboard: solid bleached board at Iggesund, Sweden and folding box board at Workington, England.
