Fossil-free energy

By investing a total of SEK 3.4 bn (EUR 357m, GDP 315m) in a new recovery boiler in Iggesund, Sweden, and a biomass CHP plant in Workington, England, Holmen Iggesund has created the conditions for manufacturing paperboard without fossil emissions from the production process. This is the main reason why Invercote and Incada have such low carbon footprints.

Green electricity to the grid

The folding box board Incada is made in Workington, England, where the energy supply was switched from fossil natural gas to biomass in 2013. This change created the conditions to reduce annual fossil emissions by 190,000 tonnes, the equivalent of taking 65,000 cars off the road.

By supplementing its energy supply with natural gas, the mill can also supply green electricity to the UK mains electricity grid.

Running on biofuels

Iggesund Mill manufactures the chemical pulp required for the production of Invercote using the sulphate process. This involves cooking logs to free their cellulose fibres, which comprise half the wood material. The remainder is the wood’s binding agent, which is mainly an energy-rich substance called lignin.

 

The energy in the lignin is recovered in the recovery boiler and is transformed into both thermal and electric energy, both of which are needed to power the manufacturing process. Iggesund Mill has all the conditions in place to be able to operate totally free of fossil energy.
